Using 3D laser scanning technology an immense amount of "as-built" accurate XYZ coordinate point data can be collected based on previously established survey control. These scans consist of many individual scans registered together to make a complete "point cloud" depicting a dam, bridge, highway, or embankment using actual measured points. This accurate surface data can be used as precise high resolution topographic data and/or it can be used to reduce the number of site visits made by the engineering staff. An engineer or civil designer can simply make "virtual" site visits which could include taking measurements of actual scanned points or be able to view these data points on a structure or site that otherwise would be totally inaccessible by conventional means.
